About

José Ramos-Horta was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996, together with Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, for his efforts to find a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor. Ramos-Horta became an exile leader for East Timor during the Indonesian occupation from 1975 to 1999. He applied to Stavanger to start an uncensored shortwave radio to East Timor, following the Peace Prize ceremony. However, the Indonesian occupation ended before the radio came on air. Ramos-Horta was elected as the new president of East Timor in 2022.
