About

Then-President Kim Dae-Jung was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for his work for democracy and human rights in South Korea and East Asia, and for peace and reconciliation with North Korea in particular. He was subjected to several assassination attempts, kidnappings, and imprisonments during his many years of fighting for democracy in South Korea. He walked with a limp for the rest of his life after a car accident in 1971. Kim's work for peace and reconciliation with North Korea was known as the Sunshine Policy. Stavanger was also involved in the Sunshine Policy at the time, including serving as hosts for four North Korean master's students. Kim Dae-jung himself came to Stavanger to thank the city for its support of the Sunshine Policy.
